Dental Implants in Rothschild

Understanding

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth. With proper care, they can last a lifetime, potentially making them one of your most cost-effective options. A consultation with Dr. Skutak in Rothschild will help determine whether dental implants are right for you, and our skilled team can help guide you through the entire process.

Learn about

The Process

After your initial consultation with Dr. Skutak, an oral surgeon will place an implant into the bone at the region where the tooth is missing. Your mouth is then given time to heal.  After healing, the crown is designed and fabricated. Once fully healed, the implant acts as a tooth root for your new crown. It is attached to the implant via the abutment, giving you a comfortable, natural-looking and permanent restoration.

Know

The Benefits

Although they can have a larger upfront cost, dental implants are one of the most cost-effective long-term treatments for missing teeth. Their permanence ensures a lifetime of smiles that require the same type of maintenance as your natural teeth. Just brush and floss as normal and make sure you are going to your regular checkups and cleanings.

Dental implants are made out of highly durable and biocompatible titanium materials. This is why they are long-lasting tooth replacements that can last for 25 years to life with proper care. Most restorations need to be replaced within a few years and have a maximum life expectancy of just 15 years.

The life expectancy of implants isn’t their only benefit that is unparalleled. They’re also the only tooth restoration that can prevent bone loss. This is done by restoring stimulation to the jawbone by forming an artificial tooth root.

This tooth root firmly holds implants in place, preventing them from ever moving. While dentures can restore tooth functionality and appearance, patients often deal with embarrassment from teeth that shift on them when they chew and speak.

You’ll never have to worry about that happening with dental implants because they’re stabilized in the jawbone. When it comes to caring for your implants, they’re incredibly low maintenance because they look, feel, and function just like real teeth.

Likewise, you can clean your implants just like you clean your natural teeth. By preserving the existing jawbone, they prevent a whole host of complications that can occur from bone loss, including premature aging, the collapse of facial features, and an increased risk of losing additional teeth.

Dental Implants:

What Are My Options?

Single-Tooth Implants - If you are only missing a single tooth, then it will be replaced with a single implant. An incision will be made into the gums and the titanium post will be implanted into the jawbone.

It will take 3 to 6 months for osseointegration to occur, which is when the jawbone grows over the implant and forms a tooth root. Then, we will reopen the gums to attach an abutment. Then, impressions will be taken of your teeth to create a dental crown that can be attached 6 weeks later.

Full Arch Implants - If you have extensive tooth loss but don’t want to deal with the instability and bone loss that comes along with other restorations, then we can support a denture or dental bridge with a series of implants.

Full arch implants are similar to traditional implants except that they can replace all of the teeth in the mouth. The procedure is the same except we will fabricate a denture or dental bridge instead of a crown. While you wait for your official teeth, you will receive an immediate temporary bridge.

How Dental Implants

Prevent Bone Resorption

One of the biggest benefits of dental implants compared to alternative treatments like partial dentures or dental bridges is that only dental implants can prevent bone resorption and keep your jaw strong.

Bone resorption usually starts to occur as soon as you lose a tooth. Daily activities like chewing, smiling and biting transmit pressure and force into the jaw bone through the root of your tooth. However, when your tooth has been lost, this pressure is no longer applied to the jaw bone. In response, it begins to deteriorate. Usually, you’ll lose as much as 25% of bone mass within a year of losing your tooth.

However, dental implants prevent this. This is because they bond permanently with your jaw and function as an artificial root. Once your implant has been completed with an implant-supported restoration from our Rothschild office, such as a dental crown, it will transmit pressure and force into your jaw, just like a natural tooth. In turn, this prevents bone resorption.

Why Is It Important

To Prevent Bone Resorption?

If your bone continues to deteriorate over time, you may not be able to have a dental implant placed, because your jaw bone will be too weak to support the implant. Bone resorption can also have aesthetic effects and change the shape of your face, particularly if you are missing multiple adjacent teeth.

Understanding The Process

Of Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the process responsible for allowing implants to function as artificial “roots” and prevent bone loss. During this process, your dental implant will bond permanently with the surrounding jaw bone after it has been placed. Dental implants are made out of titanium, which  has the unique ability to integrate with bone permanently.

As soon as your implant is placed by Dr. Skutak, the process of osseointegration will begin. While you may feel like you have completely recovered just 1-2 weeks after your implant has been placed, osseointegration is a much more gradual process and typically takes about 3-6 months. Once the process of osseointegration is complete, the implant is, for all intents and purposes, a natural part of your jaw. It will not shift or move, and with proper care and oral hygiene, it will last for 30+ years.

How Long Do

Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are built to last, which is why the actual titanium screw that is implanted into the jawbone can last for a lifetime. However, the actual restoration that is attached to the implant will need to be continuously replaced.

In single-tooth implants, a crown will last for 10 to 15 years depending on the materials it is made of and how you care for it. Dentures have a life expectancy of 7 to 10 years and bridges for up to 15 years.

To extend the lifespan of your restorations, you should practice good oral hygiene, attend regular dental appointments, and avoid using your teeth as tools.

Who Is A Good Candidate

For Dental Implants?

Anyone who is missing one or more teeth, has a healthy mouth, and a strong jaw bone is a good candidate for dental implants. In some cases, even patients who have lost some of their jaw bone due to tooth loss can still receive implants after preparatory treatment like bone grafts and sinus lifts. These treatments can strengthen your jaw to support the placement of an implant. To find out more and see if you’re a good candidate, schedule a consultation with Dr. Skutak today!
